FEATURED GUILD MEMBER FOR SEPTEMBER, DARLENE COLLINS

Darlene has been a member of the Heritage Guild since it first began when the
members met at the Rosewood Arts Center in Kettering.  She has been weaving
baskets about 26 years and began her weaving career when a lady at her church
taught her to weave a Melon Basket and as  Darlene says,  “That started the whole
shootin’ match.”   Darlene likes to weave all kinds of baskets, but her least favorite
is round reed baskets.

She was born in Dayton, Ohio, married her husband, who was in the Air Force, and
moved to Columbus for a few years before moving back to Dayton.  She and her
husband,  Cliff, have 3 children; Cliff Jr.,  Hannah, and Sarah.  Cliff Jr. just graduated
from Wright State University and he is working in Washington, D.C.  Hannah is a
senior at WSU and she just returned from Japan where she was teaching English.
Sarah is a Jr. at Youngstown State.

Darlene has many hobbies; pottery, glass fusing, sewing, quilting, cross stitching and basket weaving just to name a few.   She also has 2 cats, 2 dogs, and birds that are permanent household members.

She teaches basket weaving at the Greene County Library in Xenia, Bellbrook, and Jamestown.  She will be at the Bellbrook library Sept. 24, 11:00 – 1:00.  You can register on line and the class is free, but there is often a waiting list to get into her class.  She sells her baskets at shows, “Heritage Days” in Beavercreek   and her baskets are in the MASON JAR, which is a quilt shop in Beavercreek.

Here’s another special tid-bit that I didn’t know about Darlene, she used to be a professional roller skater and she taught roller skating until she became pregnant.   And no, her kids never got interested in skating.

"All going well so far.  Have scheduled my Grand Opening for Sept. 30th.  I wanted my parents to be here and that is the earliest they can come.  Our house is still in the process of being put back together.  Hopefully, they will finish texturing the walls on Monday and can finally start painting so Art and I can install the kitchen cabinets--then the floor goes in (or do they measure for the countertops first??) Finally the appliances will be delivered and then our furniture.  Hoping we will be moved in by the middle of September.  Will try and send photos in the next few days."
