APRIL WEAVING PROJECT            "ELAINE'S FOLLY"      taught by Ginger Lindamood

We are going to have an unusual guild project that will consume our April and May meetings this year.  (Thanks, Elaine, for the suggestion!)  In April, we will weave a basic round basket, using a slotted wooden base to start.  Weaving techniques used in this basket include twining, triple twine, and over/under weaving.  We will also at least get a start setting the spokes for the Gretchen Border during the April meeting.  If we don’t get done setting spokes for the Gretchen Border, you’ll have this task to finish as homework before you return in May.  In May, we will dedicate the entire class to doing the Gretchen Border.  The good news is that there will be a team of teachers in May to help guide us through the Gretchen process!  So fear not, my fellow weavers!

Here is the basket particulars.
Cost of complete kit:  $18.00
Cost of base only:  $5.00 (If you buy just the base, it will not come with spokes glued in.)
Cost of pattern only:  $3.00

If you want to supply your own materials, here is what you’ll need:
6” round slotted base
3/8” flat – cut 24 spokes at 8” long
3/8” flat, weavers (about 28” long each)
#3 round – cut 24 at 45” long
#3 round – 3 pieces about 12’ long, 2 pieces about 5’ long

Many of you were at the last meeting and have ordered a kit already.  But if you haven’t already signed up for the class and want to do so, please do it quickly.  For those of you who order a kit, your spokes will be glued into the base and ready to weave in April.
But you must contact Ginger Lindamood no later than Monday, March 29, to order a kit. Contact her via email at lindamoodg-m@ameritech.net or phone 937-878-9556.
Remember, the deadline for ordering a kit is Monday, March 29!
Thanks and we’ll see you in April.  And May!

NEWS FROM WINTER WEAVE    by Bonnie Krist

Once again Bernie Jines and I attended Winter Weave.  This is an event sponsored by the Wildwood Basketry Guild of Mentor, Ohio and held at the Wildwood Cultural Center.  It is three days of weaving fun.  This year we were blessed with snow and were able to stay safe and warm weaving while we watched the winter wonderland develop outside our classroom windows.

On Friday, I took a class with JoAnn Kelly Catsos and wove a black ash cracker basket which was woven over a mold.  It was my first time weaving with black ash and taking a class from JoAnn. I simply loved it.  I look forward to taking more classes with JoAnn in the future.

On Saturday, I took a Sampler Tote class with Dianne Gleixner.  I enjoy her classes too.  She always has neat, unique offerings.  Techniques included triple twining, paired weaving, stacked weaving, triple twined arrows, 4-rod wale, and French randing.   Her offerings are always reasonable priced.

On Saturday Bernie wove a double walled “Night and Day” with Karen Griffith.  On Saturday she took another class with Karen.  It was a “Woven Lamp”.  (I loved this project!)  On Sunday she wove a “Cathead Catchall” with Dianne Gleixner.  I have attached pictures of the classes that we took which are from the Winter Weave brochure.

The guild provides plenty of tasty food and snacks. There are two days of raffles with generous donations from suppliers and members. The silent auction is large with many lovely things handcrafted by talented guild members and teachers.

Attendees come from as far away at Alaska, California and Texas!  The atmosphere is warm and friendly; and it is good to see old friends and meet new ones. (We missed Margie Hayes and Kathy Spitler this year!)  Rooms are at a reduced rate at the local Best Western Lawnfield, which is charming, clean and only a mile away.  There is a hospitality weaving room open each evening at the hotel.   Restaurants are plentiful and many attend local fish fries on Friday night.  There is also plenty for the husbands to do if by chance they come with you.

Happy Weaving,
Bonnie Krist

FYI

Mikee Huber  sprained her right foot (not ankle) and may have torn the meniscus in her right knee.  She had surgery in October to remove a piece of torn meniscus in her left knee.  We wish her a fast recovery.

Theresa Cornett
