HERITAGE BASKETRY GUILD NEWSLETTER
                        APRIL 2008
Next meeting:  Monday, April 7, 2008
Project: Pottery Basket by Lorry Foucht
Refreshments: Glenna Howland and Dian Meyer
Minutes from the March 4th, 2008 meeting

Cindy Holland, guild treasurer, has obtained a Federal ID number and a State Vendors license number for our guild legally allowing us as a guild activity to sell baskets at various shows around the area. The board members voted to use funds from the treasury to pay the
space fee or entrance fee, up to 2 shows, if all members of the guild are invited to participate in if they so desire.  No tables, tents, set-up fees, sales taxes, damages or other additional fees will be paid from the guild treasury.  Those additional fees are to be paid by the members who decided to participate in the show. The board has final approval of which 2 shows to sponsor.  Submit your request to Darlene Collins, president.  A volunteer is needed to coordinate this activity.  Call Darlene if you are interested.

We have 49 members and are still counting.  Karen Douglass will send out a membership list by email.

The next MSW meeting for committee chairwomen is March 22nd, 1:30pm at the Webster Street Mkt.

Margie Hayes and Kathy Spitler have volunteered to be in charge of the MSW raffles.   They have already been busy contacting members for help.  Thanks for taking on this job, ladies.

A few teachers are still needed to teach at guild meetings this year. Call Julie K. if you can help out.  Here is what we have scheduled so far;

May: Mini basket ornaments for the MSW Christmas Tree Raffle.  Bring scraps of reed or other fibers to share.  Patterns will be provided.  All proceeds from this raffle will be donated in the memory of former guild member Cindy Clark to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Fund for breast cancer.

PROJECT FOR THE APRIL 7TH MEETING
POTTERY BASKET BY LORRY FOUCHT
Did you know...............................?
Carleen Dobie is now selling Avon producuts.  See here if you are interested in buying some Avon.  Her 17 yr. old grandson bowled in the Ohio State Tournament which took place in Springfield.  She just found out her Great grandfather made  Willow Baskets for a living years ago in Indiana.  He was oringinally from Germany.

Glenna Howland is ready for Spring and has already purchased her garden seeds.   I think we all are ready for spring.

Dian Meyer went to see, "Nemo on Ice."  She said the young kids really liked it.

The 14 month old granddaughter of
Barb Schimming fell of the kitchen table and fractured her leg.  Ouch!

Mikee' Huber
learned how to make a "Soup bead crochet necklace" on her cruise.  There were a total of 18 beaders who went to several workshops.  Mikee; took 4 classes and did some sunbathing.   She still has some basket handles to sell and will bring them to the April meeting.

Peggy West and her husband  have  bought a new house in Springboro, Ohio.  It will be awhile before they move there.

Bonnie Krist, Margie Hayes, and Kathy Spitler
had a wonderful time at Winter Weave last month.  They brought beautiful  baskets to show and tell.   Bonnie won a Chip and Dip Nantucket Basket.

Cindy Holland went to the 50th aniversary of NASCAR held in Daytona, Florida in February.

Margie H, Kathy S, and Bonnie K. are goin to Paris, Kentucky to weave with Jin Kent.  They are going to make a nantucket nesting set.

Susan Keferl is looking for donations of gently used denim jeans to make spoke weights for MSW.  If you have some, please bring them to the April meeting.

WANTED:  3 ft. Christmas tree in good condition to be used in a MSW raffle.  Call or email Julie K or Susan K.  The guild  would be willing to pay a fair                     price for the tree if necessary.

WANTED:  Donations of pattern(s) in good condition to be used in a book of patterns for MSW raffle.   You probably have patterns of baskets you made and  you don't intend to make anymore of that kind of basket.  Why let them go to waste?  Please bring your pattern(s) to the April, May, or June meeting.  Call or email Carol White if you have any questions.

LOST: I think I left a book behind on jewelry. Did anyone find it? I think I would have left it where I was sitting. I gave it to Mikee and she handed it back but my mouth was moving...........still!   It was on making jewelry and nice, new hardcover and it belongs to me!  Thanks Karen D.
Here's the first of our Guess Who's for the newsletter!

Victoria Falls in South Africa had the highest bungee jump in the world and our "guess who" person has jumped off this falls! She loves dogs but considers herself a lover of both animals now. Married 8 years, and has 2 step children, and says if there are more, she certainly can't remember and her memory isn't THAT bad so far!
Mother Theresa is the person she'd most like to meet and she'd love to be able to sing!
If she could have lived in the 1950's she would have loved to have been 20 years old and in New York City. The funniest thing to ever happen to her was going to a public rest room wearing a thong....she forgot she had a thong on! Need I say more?
And she says "Baskets are like people, they tend to be imperfect, sometimes hard to deal with, often complicated and frustrating, but more often than not, they make me smile when I'm around them.
This is a tough one!
Our Guess Who person will receive a $10 gas card for playing, who is she?

Think about who you think this could be and take a guess at the April guild meeting.
Aunt Lydia's Flower Basket
Weave in the Park Series returns…………
We have had so much fun getting together on a Saturday in the spring and fall and weaving in the park, let’s do it again!

Our first event will be
Saturday May 24 from 9 AM until you’re ready to leave. Barb Schimming has designed a beautiful basket from one she spotted in an antique store. It’s now been kid tested and weaver approved and is called Aunt Lydia’s Flower Basket.

As before, our event will be at
Taylorsville Reserve off Brown School Road in Vandalia. We have the Red Fox Run Lodge again so there’s water close, restroom facilities within walking distance, plenty of space in which to weave, plenty of laughter and just pray for plenty of sunshine!

Barb will offer
kits to those of you who wish to buy one for $40.00 which includes all the reed and pattern. You may also buy the pattern for $4.00 and bring your own reed. I will send requirements for the necessary reed in April.

This will also be
pot luck, so bring your favorite picnic item as I’ll provide hot dogs and buns and we’ll grill those and dine on what everyone else brings.

You don’t have to weave this basket! You can weave, sew, quilt, coil, bead, or just sit and kibitz. Do whatever you’d like but the fun is our gathering and enjoying spring, should it decide to eventually join us! I would like to know how many to plan on so I have plenty of dogs and buns! This is a beautiful location, last time, we even watched deer as they were watching us! So please plan to attend and enjoy a day of fun in the park!

If you already know you want a kit and want to be there, email Barb at barbschimming@roadrunner.com .

Let me know if you want to be there at dokamii@ameritech.net. We’ll have a fall adventure in the park as well, slated for Sept. 27th. We’ve not decided on a basket yet, so if you have any suggestions, please let me know! We’ll need time to contact the originator of the pattern, get her permission to weave this and buy the correct number of patterns, then I’ll get you the requirements needed for reed.

Many thanks! THINK SPRING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Karen
